2013 Snow Sculpting Competition Cancelled

Featured

The 27th Annual Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition has been cancelled due to not having enough snow to sculpt.  The event had already been postponed from January 16-19, 2013 to January 23-26, 2013.  Twelve teams from around the state were set to compete for the right to represent Illinois at the U.S. Nationals Snow Sculpting Competition.  Fifteen high school teams from the Rockford area were also going to compete in the high school division.

“We were holding out hope that enough snow would have accumulated at the Chicago Rockford International Airport over the weekend, but unfortunately, we still don’t have the amounts that were needed to form the snow piles to sculpt.  We’re disappointed that we had to cancel this popular event,” says John Beck of the Rockford Park District who hosts  the event.

In 27 years of the Rockford Park District hosting this competition, this is only the third time that this outdoor event has had to be cancelled. The 28th Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition will be held in Rockford, Illinois, January 15-18, 2013.

Rockford Park District hosts Community Snow Sculpting Contest

community-snow-sculpting-signBe on the lookout for “random acts of snow sculpting” going on throughout the community. If you see a sign like the one shown here, then the Environmental Education and Recreation Team of the Rockford Park District has been to that location.

The random snow sculptures are all to raise awareness about the 3rd Annual Community Snow Sculpting Contest. Individuals, families, businesses, and area organizations are invited to have some fun outdoors building a snow sculpture. Snap a photo of your sculpture and submit it for a chance to win some cool prizes from the Rockford Park District.

The Community Snow Sculpting Contest is presented by the Rockford Park District, Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition, and WIFR 23.
